More About Anaheim, California

Anaheim is a city in Orange County, California. It has a population over 334,000 and borders east Anaheim City. The city covers an area of 56.9 square miles (147.3 km2).

Anaheim includes the neighborhoods of Old Towne Anaheim and Midtown; formerly separate cities maintained their identities with the names South Anaheim and North Anaheim - until 1994 when these were combined as part of a regional annexation to better provide essential services to its residents as stipulated by state law.

Anaheim was a planned community from 1949 to the late 1950s, and its branding was inspired by the themes of California's agricultural past: citrus, strawberries, potatoes and tomatoes. Upon completion, the city had over 400 acres (160 ha) of trees. In an effort to reduce maintenance costs, the Irvine Company (developer of neighboring Indiana) encouraged residents to keep their front lawns short in 1969. The city has since passed an ordinance that requires front lawns to be no less than 10 feet tall and back yards at least 25 feet tall.

This change is attributed to an effort spearheaded by George Miller after he became mayor of Anaheim in 1969. Miller, a former city planner for Irvine, went to Washington and persuaded the Housing and Urban Development Agency to change the Anaheim's zoning code to keep new houses at least 25 feet from the street.

As an area became developed, the city began to take on a separate identity from that of its neighboring cities and unincorporated areas. The city of Anaheim changed its official logo in 1994 to a stylized version of an earlier, "Anaheim Cherry", used from 1955 until 1979. The city then adopted as its logo a stylized rendition of its original City Seal (designed by John Casoria in 1949), which had been used only for non-governmental use. It also abandoned the buses that were painted Cherry Gold and replaced its Fire Department vehicles with red ones.

The city's link to the Disneyland theme park and resort, which it sponsors, has proven to be a good promotional asset. However, the City's link to its sponsor has also been a source of discontent among some residents of Anaheim who have preferred the city to be known by its own name rather than by being associated with another nearby municipality. There have long been signs posted along local freeways pointing travelers directly to "Disneyland" instead of "Anaheim". Residents have often called upon the nickname "City of Anaheim". Local resident Dan Gilleon has long advocated returning Anaheim's name to "Orange.
