More About Orange, California

Orange, California is an unincorporated census-designated place and historic district located in Orange County, California. The population of the CDP was 139,237 at the 2010 census. Its elevation is 59 feet (18 m) about sea level. The city of Santa Ana lies to the south of Orange and is often considered part of Orange City's urban sprawl.

Orange was originally part of the Tongva Native American land grant that occupied the area prior to European settlement. The town was founded by Peter Whittle, an Englishman who had immigrated to California in 1848. He and his followers first established a trading post in what is now downtown Orange and later moved it across the Santa Ana River to its present location to capitalize on the climate and grain production of the high ground. In 1887, Whittle donated land for Orange County's first industrial complex. This complex of related facilities (the largest of which still stand today) provided substantial employment for local residents.

The city is home to a series of popular public festivals, including the Festival of the Arts, the Fall Festival and Fiesta Village Fair, and the Taste of Orange Festival. The Anaheim Convention Center is also located in Orange.

In 1955, the city was incorporated as the City of Orange Park Acres; it was given its current name in 1986. A 2007 study against consolidation stated that "city government in Orange is highly decentralized with several independent governments within the city limits: The City (Orange), North Tustin, Tustin Foothills, Eastside and Westside.

According to the 2010 U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total population of 139,237 and a land area of 7.4 square miles (19 km2). The Orange Police Department is the primary law enforcement agency for the city; it patrols the city in addition to providing school-based police for two elementary schools (Elementary School #8 and Elementary School #10).
