This article provides information about Huntington Beach, and its related topics.

The City of Huntington Beach is located in Orange County, just south of Newport Beach and north of Laguna Niguel. It was founded as a vacation spot for South Californians by Henry Gage in 1887. The city is best known for its beaches and surfing culture.

History
The area currently known as Huntington Beach was originally occupied by the Tongva Native Americans. In 1798, Spanish explorers came to the area in pursuit of deserters from New Spain; they killed several Tongva in their search for three soldiers. In 1898, following the Treaty of Paris, the US took control of California and built a military base on what is now Huntington Beach. The US Army relinquished control of Huntington Beach in 1903 and it was incorporated as part of the newly created Orange County. The name "Huntington Beach" came along soon after its incorporation on March 27, 1909.

The original pier was built in 1909, but it washed out within a year. Its replacement was built to a length of 740 feet (230 m) and extended into the bay by 25 feet (7.6 m). This was later lengthened by an additional 25 feet (7.6 m), bringing the pier's total length to 800 feet (240 m) and width to 100 feet (30 m). The pier was constructed entirely of wood even though it stood over water for several decades; it began disintegrating in the late 1930s, but no money was available for its replacement. The pier was finally rebuilt using mostly concrete and steel, completed in April 1940.

The Huntington Beach Marine Safety Department was founded circa 1963.

Huntington Harbor is home to the highest-attended Independence Day fireworks show in the US. The event is from July 1 - July 4th and attracts over 500,000 visitors every year. The event began in 1980 with a small fireworks show that has grown to an all-night celebration of Americana. The show has transformed into a 4-day celebration that includes concerts, food vendors and games for family entertainment. In 2003, over 800,000 people attended the celebration at Huntington Beach Pier and Main Street Promenade.
