More About Buena Park, California
Buena Park is a city in Orange County and part of the Greater Los Angeles Area, California United States. The population was 170,393 at the 2010 census which makes Buena Park the 4th most populous city in Orange County behind Anaheim, Santa Ana-Anaheim , and Stanton . The city encompasses about 32 square miles (82 km²) as shown on its official government website estimate map that was last updated to March 31 2018 . The estimated population of Buena Park is 205k people (2016). Buena Park is located at . Buena Park is a small city in between the large cities of Los Angeles, Long Beach and Santa Ana. The city is about 15 miles (24 km) southeast of downtown Los Angeles.
The history of Buena Park can be traced to the middle 19th century when California became a recognized destination for immigrants from around the globe. People from China, Japan, Korea, Poland and Southern Europe immigrated to work on farms in Buena Park and throughout Southern California. For example, Italian farmers were reportedly among the first farmers in the area surrounding present-day Artesia
During a trip to California in 1867, P.H. Burnett, of the Collis P. Huntington banking firm, and his party discovered large areas of land in Southern California that were ideal for farming purposes. Because the Ventura area was considered too mountainous for farming purposes, Burnett suggested that the area be used as grazing land for cattle run by Huntington's Central Pacific Railroad (later acquired by Southern Pacific). Within two years, several settlers arrived to grow a variety of commodities such as grapes and corn or build a home on their purchased land.
The area was named "Sycamore" due to the creek which ran through Buena Park which had an abundance of sycamore trees. Sycamore's central location in the county and its proximity to Los Angeles made it the place for the fledgling towns residents to run their businesses. The city was incorporated in 1895 by George C. Richardson, Charles A. Skidmore and several other leading citizens of the day including John G. Cooper, a Los Angeles attorney. At one point there was a hotel at Buena Park that went by such names as Queen of Hearts Hotel, Queen's Palace Hotel and Barlow's Hotel which was built in 1885 by John W. Simonds in honor of his wife Mary Elizabeth Barlow Simonds who died that year at age 29.
