Santa Ana was originally a Spanish land grant given to Manuel Nieto and his heirs in 1836. The Hegisto family of Santa Ana owned much of the property that is now Santa Ana, as well as much of the land that is now Orange County. The Hegistos, who were descendants of Guadalajara, Mexico were known throughout their lives for great hospitality, generosity and appetite for all things "caliente" (hot). Their nickname was "Los Chorros", which later became the name of their ranch - the Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana - located in what is now downtown Santa Ana. The Hegistos named the rancho Santa Ana by taking advantage of a naming right drawn up by Don Santiago and his wife in 1821. "Santa Ana" means "holy flame" or "holy fire".

In November 1838, Jose Estudillo of the San Juan Capistrano mission sent a letter to the Commandant General of the California Army reporting that he was sending 20 volunteers from the area around present day downtown Santa Ana to fight against Mexico's troops. The letter was delivered to Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado, who offered them a reward of $500 for bringing back an enemy soldier.
