More About Tustin, California

Tustin is an unincorporated community in Orange County, California. It was the first planned community in Orange County. Tustin borders the city of Irvine, which it was incorporated with in 1959 after Irvine's incorporation in 1955 became controversial due to its rapid growth.

The city is home to many parks and natural areas including Tustin Regional Park, Tustin Ranch Park and Trailhead Nature Area, as well as wetland conservation areas on its northern boundary at Dairy Creek. The city is also located near the Foothill Freeway (California State Route 55) connecting Los Angeles and San Diego.

Tustin is off the 5 and 405 freeway interchange. The area code is 714. Local police service is provided by the Tustin Police Department, which shares a building with the Orange County Sheriff's Department Tustin Station on El Camino Real.

The city has partnered with the non-profit organization Friends of the Urban Forest, whose efforts are focused on urban reforestation of trees within and around Tustin. The city has an Arbor Day Foundation "Tree City USA" status, and a municipal tree-planting project.

Etymology

The name Tustin was chosen because it is a combination of the city seal of Irvine as well as the city's location between Tustin and Trabuco Canyon. There are at least four theories to explain the origins of this term: 1) It is a combination of the German words "Türk" (the letter “ü”) and "Schwarz", meaning "black" and describing the color of a non-native population; 2) The name has more likely come from "Tüst" which means , "keeper" or "guard". This name was used by settlers for a village that had been in this area since pre-history. The original name was "Tustin". From a place name in Dorset it came to England with the Norman conquest. It finally fell out of use as a village name in favor of Tustin, possibly because the land was bought by the government and became a park; 3) The city's name is said to have been derived from the Spanish word "tustin", meaning "thistle". It can be found in old maps of Spain; 4) The word is a combination of the Spanish words "tuja" and "sta." Tuja refers to a species of tree. Sta means standing or standing up, referring to trees that are standing while others are fallen around them.
