To the west is Orange County, across San Juan Creek; and to the north is unincorporated territory of Orange County; a small portion also extends into southwestern Los Angeles County in the community of Aliso Viejo. Most of Irvine's southern border is formed by the Santa Ana river; a narrow corridor along its northwestern portion also has a small stretch on its southeastern side running through several small unincorporated areas.
