More About Laguna Beach, California

Laguna Beach is a city in Orange County, California, along the Pacific coast. First called "The Lagoon," it was an early fishing village settled in 1849. The population was 25,813 at the 2010 census.

The city features a Mediterranean climate and landscape with hills bordering the ocean on three sides. According to the United States Census Bureau, Laguna Beach has 8.1% Asian and 2.2% other race residents with Russians making up 3% of total registered voters at 1702 individuals or 44 households as of July 1, 2013. Residents have been involved in anti-illegal immigration campaigns that have become focal points for protests during these recent years".

In 2010, the mediterranean climate was characterized by having very warm and dry summers and mild, wet winters. The most rain falls in the winter months under both chinook winds and the northern saddleshrew. The seasonal laguna is typically considered to run from early December to late February; it peaks during this period with some days being so dry that water towers would need to be installed due to drought conditions. During other years, generally from late June through mid-October, daytime temperatures are at their peak with night temperatures reaching into the lower 60s. Summer thunderstorms are common during this time of year bringing showers and lightning as well as foggy nights. Laguna Beach averages 4.6 inches (11 cm) of rain per year.

Laguna Beach is fairly shady, and helps to protect the area from heat during the summer months by absorbing sunlight. The yearly average high temperature between 1961 and 1990 was 89.4 °F (32 °C), which is mild for coastal Southern California, especially compared to inland cities such as Los Angeles or San Diego that typically experience temperatures of 5 °F (3 °C) or more above the long-term historical average. Summer temperatures in Laguna Beach often do not exceed 100 °F (38 °C). The record high was 112 degrees Fahrenheit on July 24, 1990, while June 2008 reached 96 degrees Fahrenheit some 60 years after the previous record set in 1932. The average coolest month is December, while the average warmest month is August. In December 1963, the persistent winds from a weak trough off the Pacific Ocean produced gusts up to 42 miles per hour (68 km/h) at Laguna Beach while gales were reported further north toward Santa Barbara.

The city is also very wet by regional standards with an average annual rainfall of 48.3 inches (122 cm). The wettest year on record was 1983 with 71.49 inches (1,819 mm), and the driest was 1953 with 26.90 inches (679 mm).
