More About Corona Del Mar, California
Corona del Mar, California is a resort city in Newport County, California. It is located on the Pacific coast at the extreme eastern (and older) end of Orange County and extends from Huntington Beach at the south to Corona Del Mar or "CDM" at the north.
It was incorporated in 1938 as one of Newport Beach's nine "Beach Cities" and essentially functions as a type of municipal resort area for Orange County's very wealthy residents. The city has no commercial zoning, but rather consists only of beaches on the Pacific Ocean shoreline with homes built up to them; commercial development is restricted to inland areas that are not adjacent to beach properties. Corona Del Mar is the second smallest city in Orange County (after Newport Beach), with a total area of 3.6 square miles (9.3 km²,).
Corona del Mar is named after the Spanish word for star, which was purportedly inspired by nearby Corona del Mar State Beach.
In his book "The Next American Nation," Vernon Ruttan notes that Corona del Mar is a heavily Jewish community, but that this may be changing due to a large number of non-Jewish residents moving into the city over the past few years.
The 2010 United States Census reported that Corona Del Mar had a population of 23,568. The population density was 3,877.2 people per square mile (1,480.9/km²). The racial makeup of Corona Del Mar was 15,416 (61.3%) White (40.6% Non-Hispanic White), 938 (3.1%) African American, 336 (1.2%) Native American, 2,264 (8.5%) Asian, 181 (0.7%) Pacific Islander, 634 (2.4%) from other races, and 1,447 (5.6%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2,028 persons (8.2%).
The Census reported that 23,566 people (99.9% of the population) lived in households, 0 (0%) lived in non-institutionalized group quarters, and 40 (0.2%) were institutionalized.
There were 9,460 households, out of which 1,854 (19.6%) had children under the age of 18 living in them, 3,254 (33.4%) were opposite-sex married couples living together, 815 (8.5%) had a female householder with no husband present.
