Dana Point has a warm semi-arid climate, with average temperatures around 64 °F (18 °C). The city experienced a cholera epidemic that killed most of the population of Native Americans living in the area. The site was named after the headland of Dana Point, which was itself named after Richard Henry Dana, Jr., author of the classic Two Years Before the Mast and friend to author Jack London.

"Dana" was used in honor of Richard Henry Dana, an American poet who wrote "To An Ocean Waif" about life on a merchant ship in 1840. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Dana moved to California for his health as a young man and lived there for ten years before returning east to write literature. He died at home at age 70. He is buried in Riverside, California. The city's other nickname "The Queen City of the Pacific Coast" comes from a popular song written by Fred Fisher during World War II.

Dana Point was originally inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years, but today only a small handful of families still live in the area. Dana Point is located 12 miles from San Clemente Island, home of Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base, which offers access to the Pacific Ocean through its harbor and beaches. The wildlife in this area includes seals and sea lions that can be spotted swimming near shore or resting on rocks.
