More About San Juan Capistrano, California

San Juan Capistrano is a city in Orange County, California. The current population is at an estimated 27,190. It is known for its historic Mission and nearby Sleepy Cat Ranch. The area includes the neighborhoods of Los Rios Street Historic District, Downtown and the Historic Rural Blufflands. It was named after Saint John of Capestrano, who was born Francesco di Giovanni di Simone Fidati in Porciano (in the province of Arezzo) on 1606 August 29th which would give him a birthdate of 1607 January 18th by modern calendar reckoning]. He was a Catholic priest and a Franciscan missionary born in Capestrano, Italy. He joined the order when he was eighteen years old, and he preached his first sermon in his home town. He then went to Rome and studied theology at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, Angelicum. He later preached for fifteen years in Spoleto before leaving for the Missionary fields of New Spain (México). In New Spain, Father Fidati went by the name of Junípero Serra but his surname was actually Fidati.

Father Junípero Serra reached California in 1769 as a missionary. His first assignment was to build a mission in San Diego. Later, he also founded the San Luis Rey Mission and the Carmel Mission. Serra died in 1784 at the age of 62. He was canonized by the Catholic Church in 1846 as a saint after his death.

The city has been home to different Mexican and American military personnel since the 1830s, when California and the United States acquired their statehood. The city is also home to CSUCI (California State University, Irvine), Avila University, and Chapman University.

1997 to the Present

In 1997, Michael Jackson and his family left Los Angeles for this city, choosing it as their home for five years. He purchased a $20 million mansion in the upscale community of Rustic Canyon and made yearly visits to his Neverland Ranch in California. Also in 1997, The Simpsons episode "The Last Temptation of Homer" featured a drive-by view of downtown San Juan Capistrano. The city is also mentioned in another episode of The Simpsons, "Who Shot Mr. Burns?". The episode "The Seven-Beer Snitch" has the main character's friend being sentenced to give seven beers to the madman who is attacking Springfield each week. In this episode, he is sent to San Juan Capistrano instead of Springfield.

Other notable events having occurred in San Juan Capistrano include a near-death experience by Jose Antonio Vargas (a Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist) when his car crashed on a highway and plunged into a ravine in 2004, and an Art Walk on June 2nd and 3rd 2007 featuring over 100 different artists from various parts of Orange County.
